Was previously no motion, lens error. Now it edges open over 3 tries then closes itself on the 4th try. Progress, maybe? Thinking of trying a bit of grease. Or a new lens assembly. It was just an unexpectedly started lens error no shock or sand which kept the lens fully extended. I could not pin-point the problem to any specific functionality zoom, iris, focus, IS : everything looked like fully functional and clean.
Tried also cleaning the photosensors telling the positions of the different mechanisms, but no luck. The only positive thing was that I was able reassemble the 3-D puzzle two times without changing the failure mode.
Opening the barrel anyway resulted in so much dust in there that continuing fixing it was anyway unfeasible. So I ended to buy a repair part from AliExpress, and it fixed the problem straight away. I saved the failed assembly: may be some day I have to replace some subcomponent in the lens e.
IS for which I now have spares hopefully not - a clean room would be needed for that …. My replacement lens assembly failed after 3 weeks, with the exactly same symptoms!
The repair part I used was definitely a used one; I do not expect unused lens units being on the market really anymore. Technically, it is typically the FPC flex cable of the diaphragm assembly that gets a sharp turn which cracks its conductors. So if you carefully open the lens assembly in a clean place, you can just replace the diaphragm unit with its cable and save plenty of money in spare part price.
But most important, if you open the lens, you can also add some tape to stiffen the diaphragm cable to avoid sharp folds — it may increase the life-span of the cable and therefore opening the lens is worth of it instead of just replacing it.
You can hear the lens sounds by turning the volume way up. I have never attempted a repair on the lens assembly, although I have thought about it. There are several broken ones in a box on my desk that I could have a go at with nothing to lose.
It would be nice if there were an easy way to test the lens assembly without having to put the camera all the way back together. Fix Your Stuff Community Store. Difficulty Moderate. Up until the lens error, it performed pretty well. I'm comparing it to my previous camera, a Powershot S60, which I really liked. The main shortcoming of the S, for me, is definitely the ISO80 limitation for shots longer than 1". Hi friends! My friend sent to Canon USA and my camera just fixed without no cost too. It's work again! I'm so happy and i hope it isn't occurs again! I love to take pictures with my S! Got the camera back today. From the note returned with the camera: "Your product has been examined and it was found that the optical assembly did not operate properly causing an error to be displayed.
The optical assembly was replaced. Product functions were confirmed. Everything seems sweet for now. Adam: Sounds like they replaced the lens and whatever holds it into the body.
This seems to be the thing that's breaking and causing problems on various copies of this camera. Glad yours is working now. Martha too.
Thanks Richard! I just returned my S95 to canon Canada for the 3rd time. Focus issues then now lens error. I've only had Canon's for decades and never had any issues until the S series. I'm waiting for them to tell me if they'll fix it under warranty as it's been a pain in the ass for the entire year and 2 months i've had it. I had hoped the s would not be so full of bad too.
If so, what kind of problems? Edited by optimal effect member 10 years ago. I purchased this camera yesterday and I'm just praying this error doesn't come up on mine. Been reading a lot of users having this problem and wonder if it's just a bad batch of ss. Previously I had the Power S95 and never had any problems like this.
I really liked the camera but the screen cracked and wanted to get a new one. What does your camera serial number start with? I have owned an S for almost three months, and until today have been very happy with it. Today, after taking a few photographs, I tried to shut off the camera.
Guess what? The dreaded "lens error - will shut down automatically - restart camera" message. The lens would not retract into the camera body. The camera would not restart. I took the camera back to the Best Buy store where it was purchased, only to be told that it would have to be shipped out for repair; if repair not possible, then replacement. I sure hope so. I really rely on my camera. It is my one and only. Thanks for listening!
Sad to hear that you had the lens error. Hope you have the Canon warranty. Ask the Canon service to set it right. I too had the same problem and canon set it right. Edited by ali member 10 years ago. Yesterday, almost four months after I bought the camera, I got the lens error message.
I tried the "home remedies" I found online, but nothing worked. I just took it to Best Buy, where I bought it, but they told me I have to ship to Canon, and it will take about three weeks to fix. Just when I'm going on a vacation where I was planning on taking great photos Edit: I forgot to ask Richard or anybody who might know the answer : How do you do "a complete reset of the camera's settings"? I've taken out the battery, and even the memory card, but I'm not sure if there's another think I can do to try to fix this problem.
I really don't want to be without my camera for three weeks. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. There's a menu setting to reset all stored settings. That's all I know about this camera and resets. The problem is that to operate the menu button, you need to have the camera turned on, and whenever I turn the camera on, I get the error message, and nothing including the menu button works.
But thanks anyway. I appreciate your response. Eduardo Micet 10 years ago. I hope never to have this problem. In case it appears I will sell it. Bought this camera at Best Buy end of Jan I didn't buy the extended warrenty so I called Canon warrenty that was in box, sent camera in and was returned within week.
Canon closed over weekend. Took camera in today to Best buy thinkning they might exchange for me. NOPE have to send camera back. I couldn't have stressed more to please just replace camera. They have already tried to fix and it didn't work. So frustrating. I will make sure to use camera hopefully new one a lot until 1 yaer warrenty is up. I hope Canon has fixed this issue.
Annie-M-Hannah 10 years ago. Hmm, it seems like a lot of these issues are with a batch bought between December January I love this little thing and hope I got one from a good batch! Annie: just take a lot of pictures with it, zoom the lens all the way out to mm and shoot some and look at the pictures on your computer. Shoot things that are easy to see focus on: faces, fences, etc.
You'll know early on if you got a problem camera the odds are that you got a good one. Edited by stylishsophiztication member 10 years ago. Lens error happened recently so I've been contacting Canon US, my local Canon repair centre and Best Buy and it appears because Best Buy is so aware of this issue they will no longer just replace.
Their automatic response was to send to Canon US. As others have mentioned, because the warranty is region specific US in my case it has to be sent to the US for repair where it will most likely then be repaierd free of charge under warranty though this can't be confirmed until they actually sight the malfunction and then it can only be sent to a US address. So unless you have a US shipping address to send to, you won't have luck this way. To those who have had luck with Best Buy just replacing it - I wish they would still do that but I think they've cottoned on :.
Thanks, Richard. Has anyone determined if this is batch specific? Anyone had troubles with recently purchased cameras? Dear canon. For a second time in 1 month the Canon powershot s camera has failed me on a important hike. This is unacceptable. There must be some kind of design fault with this camera. The camera is not fit for use. I dont want to have to keep sending it back to canon for repair this is out the question. I would like to know how your going to compensate me for messing up my photo taking on two holiday hikes and what camera will your replace my s with.
I trust you will get back to me with a satisfactory answer to uphold your good name in photography. To say i am not happy with this camera is a understatement. Thanks you very much. I look forward to hearing from you. Keith Hallam 10 years ago. I have had the same problem - lens error. The camera has not been dropped or abused in any way. Looks like my supplier is not an Authorized Canon supplier so probably no Canon warranty. Canon have quoted me repair price equal to half what I paid for the camera under four months ago.
Looks like the camera is scrap. Very robust units. My camera return from canon and broken again, so desappointed!!!!! I want my money back!!!! Where did you buy it that has prompted Canon to not service it for free? Hello Richard, Thank you for the interest; very kind. I bought it from a dealer on Sulit. It was new, boxed etc. Please read on for details of the phenomenon, affected products and support available in Australia and New Zealand.
Thank you for using Canon products. Please note that the free-of-charge repairs described below, which we notified you about on 28 June , will end on 30 September Phenomenon Some PowerShot S units with the serial numbers listed below may encounter a lens error due to a part becoming disconnected inside the lens.
